Turtle Grass in the shallows

Sea grasses are often removed from coastal shallows adjacent to white sandy beaches as tourism operators feel it looks more aesthetically pleasing to have turquoise water. Turtle grass is extremely important in the coastal environment because it helps to absorb nutrients from land runoff before they can reach the reef and cause damage to corals. Also sea grass beds are important nursery grounds for juvenile fish who begin their lives here before moving out to the reef upon reaching adulthood. Furthermore, they help to attenuate damaging wave energy, preventing beach erosion. Their removal acts to impoverish the marine environment and reduce biodiversity on reefs.
